It is that time of year again when the sap is running and the maple sugar house is hopping. My brother says this local sugar house is one of the biggest in the state. Learn more at the official NH Maple Producers website.
The tractor with the empty container drives up our road and drains the vat near my brother's property. Some of the sap comes from my brother's trees. The tractor returns to the sugar house with the clear sap.
And empties it into these open vats.
Wow. That's a lot of sweetness.
Here the clear sap is being cooked down into syrup. Approximately 43 gallons of sap are needed to make one gallon of syrup!
This year I have TWO little boxes of freshly made maple candy to give away. The boxes are 4 inches by five inches and have 12 small candies within. I've never tasted maple sugar candy...but I've never held back on the syrup for my pancakes or waffles.This is a great offer and I'm sure won't hurt my exercise plan! ha Thank you for thinking of this gift offer!

Cris, I dont know if the process hurts the tree. I mean, they don't die from it for sure as they are tapped year after year. maybe it is like milking a cow.
I will defer to the drawing because I don't care for maple flavor, but I really enjoyed your photos of the maple syrup process. I did know that it takes a lot of sap to make a gallon. Makes me wonder how the trees can produce enough for all those bottles of syrup. Thanks for the tour.

Never tasted the real thing, only maple-flavoured fudge. Fascinating to read how it is made, and how many gallons of sap are needed for one gallon of syrup - no wonder the price here has doubled this year. It's more valuable than motor-fuel! Please count me in.

So, I just thought that I would tell you that we spent an incredible vacation one year in N.H. and that I love it there. And, I don't know many people who are aware of Wabi Sabi but I have books, poetry and art that is all Wabi Sabi. I even found a child's book for my Granddaughter that is all about Wabi Sabi. I have book-marked your site and intend on following. I, too, am a writer (although not published) and have a BA in art. Why do you have to move? And, have you decided where to go? these maple candies always remind me of my grandmother--she loved them and as kids we always looked forward to visiting her in the spring when we knew one or two might come our way!

aw, those photos make me wish i could spend more time on the east coast (i'm born and raised in socal). i've never tried maple candy before, but those look almost too pretty to eat!
