amaryllis

All things come to she who waits. The flowers on this Christmas present are 8 inches in diameter. After two months plus in my cold house, they finally opened. A spot of cheer in mid-winter.

When my grandfather died, the hospital gave me his Amaryllis plant, which had never bloomed for him, but which always had really lush leaves. The plant sent up sturdy flower stalks within days of his death...and then bloomed until September. It took a very short rest, then bloomed heartily again for Christmas.

Needless to say, a plant that was not a favourite quickly became one. Each time I see an Amaryllis, it reminds me of my grandfather! xx

Marion, that's a beautiful story. I never buy an amaryllis myself, but a friend sends me one. However, I saw one at someone's house and when my parents were alive, I began sending them amaryllis plants at christmas which would of course open in Jan or Feb. They loved them. That meant a lot, as they were very hard to buy for. I liked thinking of their delayed delight.

Oh Suki...a reminder that I HAVE known you for a few years now.
I remember your posting on an Amaryllis before ....and how I thought what a glorious riot of colour - particularly as it blooms in Winter... Up *there* on the Mountain, you don't have much colour in WInter - save for white, grey and brown....so this brilliant reddish-fuchsia is like a belated Christmas Gift! (I know, I'm going on and on....but everyone who visits here knows how I get when I see lovliness!)

Marion's story is poignant....and also uplifting!

Enjoy the *glow*!

Love to you and Bibs,

♥ Robin ♥

Hope your head is feeling better, Suki :) My Amaryllis used to bloom and bloom and bloom, but hasn't in a couple of years now... The leaves still come up, but no bud... :( Maybe it just wore itself out :)

That is so gorgeous! The red is like fire! I love the winter bloomers - I have crocuses that are just getting taller so far - fingers crossed that they will bloom! I have them in teacups on a windowsill ....

It's divine. My mother always used to buy me an amaryllis. Somehow I never get around to doing it. Seeing this picture reminds me of my mom and how spectacular these plants are. Maybe next year!
