Sketchbooks and notebooks

The artists or writers sketchbook or notebook has always been fascinating to me. Recently Leslie Avon Miller and Robyn Gordon both posted about their and others sketchbooks and notebooks. Some of the notebooks shown are downright works of art!

I havent been keeping a sketchbook, and reading the above posts gave me a thirst to do so. I tore a 22" by 30" sheet of Stonehenge paper into equal parts giving me four sheets of paper or twelve pages to equal one signature. I will make more signatures as needed and bind them together later.

My pages are quick and messy. I want to make self-portraits in this signature. Here I took an old journal page, glued it down with matte medium, then before it dried lifted the page off. The writing, backwards, was left behind. I used an old collograph plate to stamp an image. Acrylic paint. I am not done with this page.

Antique bronze paint. Charcoal.

Journal pages glued on and charcoal markings. Stenciled shapes.

Do you keep a journal, whether of words or sketches?? If you post about your journal I will link to your post. Hmm, maybe I should investigate Mr Linky?

Check out Sue Brown's sketchbook post here.

It's fascinating to take a peek in artists' notebooks. I especially like your first sketch. A self-portrait?

What fun. I like your ideas too. I have kept a verbal journal for years and years. Nothing I would post but I feel a need to do so. I am trying to get into Art journaling now. We will see how it goes. :)

I love your self portrait. It reminds me of Leonard Cohen's self portraits - he drew one every day for a period of his life - an interesting proposition on many levels.
I'm a journaller, but my "pages" are very personal and nothing I would post. I also keep a daily notebook of chores, lists and doodlings which goes everywhere with me. Nothing as gorgeous as yours, though - because it's only ever done in pen there is no real colour in there.
Seeing yours makes me think that I should make a bit more of an effort.

I love journals/sketchbooks/workbooks of artists too, and read an article about architects also keeping these. Fascinating!

Loved seeing your self portraits Suki, would love to see more of your art - it's wonderful!

I a a sucker for text mixed into images and your faces are fabulous!

A new outlet for you I think? When will you have time to sleep?

Your sketches are so loose and natural. I find sketching to be one of the hardest disciplines. I am traveling today and have my moleskine with me .... Maybe I will actually use it!!!!

You haven't been appearing in my sidebar :(

I have made so many attempts at keeping journals. I love the whole idea of them, but I think I get white page syndrome when I sit down with one! I don't really have anything interesting to say.

I'll check out the links now.

I love the start of yours Suki. Looking forward to seeing more!♥

It looks as if you are having such fun with your journal pages, Suki. I keep / make all sorts of sketchbooks and altered books, and write about them in my 'Journaling the Journal' blog: http://annmiles.blogspot.com

I will enjoy seeing how yours evolves - and I also really love Stonehenge paper.
