The Hot Chocolate and Popcorn Movie Review

If you read my sidebar, you know I love movies and often watch 5-6 per week. I also dislike winter, especially up here in the Siberia of the East Coast. Movies, hot cocoa and popcorn get me through these dark, cold and lonely nights. I plan to post a Hot Chocolate Review every now and again, focusing on movies made from novels, plays, poems and so forth. Today: Esther Freud.
I love tracking down somewhat obscure writers. Esther Freud is not well known in this country but she has written a number of low key literary novels including The Sea House. Her first novel, Hideous Kinky, is semi-autobiographical. It tells the story of two young girls who travel to Morocco in the 70's with their mother, escaping a messy divorce. The movie stars Kate Winslet. If you enjoy exotic settings such as Morocco and a sixties flavor you might enjoy this one. Esther Freud is the daughter of painter Lucian Freud and great-granddaughter of Sigmond Freud. (this is not a very good clip of the movie but all I could find, sorry.)

Okay you got my attention. Do you rent these through Netflick or find them on TV already??? That's a lot of viewing! Keep telling us about the good ones please, and could you remind me of one you mentioned a while back about a woman, it looked so good but I forgot to write the name. Hope you know which I am referring to. Thanks.

Raining here...but not too cold.
Still, I would love to be eating popcorn and drinking cocoa with you!

i love this idea--and you always have such interesting books and movies that you introduce. sounds great and i have to admit having sort of a romantic thing about morocco--i had a teacher who spent her summers there and she loved it so much she made me want to go....

Wonderful movie! One of my favorites. I saw it one night quite a while ago on and IFC or Sundance (cable where I live now doesn't offer Sundance and I miss it!).
Would love for you to share your reading and/or your favorite books. (I should scroll back to your past blogs. I also love movies. I'm reading Anna Karenina now. 800 pages, but am really enjoying it.
Interesting background about it. Very catchy title. Didn't know it was from a book and by Lucien Freud's daughter no less! I didn't know the painter was related to "the" Freud.

I saw this years ago and it's time for another watch! It's going on the Netflix queue right now. Kate Winslet always does an excellent job. Thanks, Suki. (Also added the Branagh series.)

Well, this is certainly one I missed. I'm not a big viewer of movies but I like seeing these trailers and knowing what you watch. Happy movie watching!

This sounds intriguing. I often love slightly offbeat movies. Will have to put this one on my list.

I also love movies- I consider the good ones an art form. I saw 9 of the 10 nominated for oscar Best Picture.
I am very familiar with Lucian Freud but had not heard of this movie- it must have been very low under the radar-- it does look exotic.
