nothing but the tooth

On Tuesday I am having my abscessed tooth pulled by an oral surgeon. I have been through some debate as to whether to use simple Novocain or use general anesthesia. The dentist highly recommends the anesthesia, although this may be for his convenience. Ie: he is assured the patient will not toss and turn and leap etc. If I wanted to go the simple Novocain route, I would have to change dentists and wait another two months for an appointment.

The tooth will be hard to pull and will come out in pieces. It already has a crown and root canal pin in it. Plus there are three roots. Ah well. I am a coward. My worst fear is I will die from the drugs. So I will write a note to my son just in case.

My brother will drive me. It is required by law that you not drive yourself when you have had anesthesia. I could also have a fibroma removed from inside my mouth while I am under. Monday is the last day I can decide about that.

I will get a massage on Monday to relax me. I am saving my two Netflix films to view on Tuesday or Wednesday. I also have a few books on tape. I am prepared, should I need to lie around for a few days. Now, I must make some jello, which I never eat so I dont know why I think I will post-tooth event. And maybe some pudding. Which I do eat.

Not looking forward to this. I could have chosen to "save the tooth" via two other options. Nowadays few dentists recommend tooth pulling when the tooth can be saved. It was my idea to have it pulled.

Oh well, That's life.

as a woman with many dental problems, i feel for you ;-( good luck with it all and let people pamper you...i'll be sending you best wishes....is there a way you could have an oral surgeon, not a dentist do this? then your insurance will cover it and they do it quickly and without all the brouhaha...maybe....i know every dental issue is a bit different but i've done much better when i've had a tough tooth removed by an oral surgeon....and again, good luck....

Mary he is an oral surgeon. I dont really think regular dentists do this anymore.

Suki, you are certainly a worrier of everything. I had all four wisdom teeth extracted at once several years ago (two were impacted and had to be chipped out). Needless to say, I was knocked out for it. It was painful for a week after, but then it was over. I think one will not be so bad. Good luck and I hope your are relatively pain free.

I say go for the general anesthesia. It's really safe today.
I have had those teeth pulled that required chipping away and taking it out by bits and pieces. This way here you won't feel it or even hear what's going on. Much better!

Did I ever tell you I had my tonsils out with novacaine? Now that was a nightmare of barbaric proportions!

I'll tell you about it some other time. ugh :/

Best to you no matter what you choose Suki. As long as it feels right to you.♥

Suki, as I already told you - I am the ALL TIME Dental coward! Use the anesthesia...... when you wake up, you will be groggy - but still pain-free. They will give you a prescription for vicodin - but hopefully, you won't be in enough pain afterwards to want to use it. Aaron will drive you home....and you already have stocked up on the things you will need: jello/pudding.... perhaps make some soup too.... books, Netflix....and much napping in teh sun with the cats next to you.

The mouth heals quickly - and this will soon be a memory....

Sending you love AND courage.... it will go fine.... USE THE ANESTHESIA!!!

Be put out.. much easier for you. I have had teeth pulled out under anesthesia.. safe and its over before you know it. Get all done while you can and are under ONCE. You dont want to go thru this again.

Good luck with this extraction...not an easy one. Movies, books and pudding...you are all set...again, good luck!

You will be fine. I had one extracted and I started with the novacaine and ended up having to put me out to get it out after the guy was standing on the chair I was in lifting me out trying to pull it. Ha... It won't hurt for long.

Oh boy, I get the shakes just thinking of going through that. Been there, done that and lived to tell but yikes, not fun.

I will be thinking of you and best of luck. Happy to hear you are well prepared for recovery.

Suki, I am sorry you have to deal with this. These things are such difficult decisions to make. I do wish you the very best and know you will come through with flying colors! I don't do novocaine at all, so I know what my choice would be! It will be fine, really!

Yes, I'd go for the anaesthesia. Why put yourself through unecessary pain? Take care of your self, I'm sure all will look better after this has been taken care of. ((hugs))

Suki, a post script from "Dr. Robin", I just finished eating a delicious omelet (with the remainder of the mushrooms I bought for your pasta dish)... omelets (sans mushrooms) are easy to make and easy to swallow....make sure you have some eggs.....

Love always,

♥ Robin ♥

I think i have already shared my teeth experiences with you and the blog community! But again, I would only do this with anesthetic. I've woken up twice from it now; the oral surgeon told me the first time that he had had to do a lot of digging so it was good I chose to be "out"! If it were me, I'd have the other thing removed too, get it all done at once, when I am "OUT"! I did not need Vicodin after mine. I took Ibprofen only and not much of that. I was groggy for a very short time after. Soft foods is a good idea. Treat and pamper yourself, but you will be fine in no time at all. I do not remember days of recovery. More like a few hours. I used ice packs every 20 minutes afterwards as prescribed. And was fine.
I know you will be fine too. You might have your son stay with you right afterwards for a few hours just to make sure you are fine...and to pamper you a bit. Patty did that for me both times.
It's nice to have someone there.
Wednesday this will all be behind you! ;-) And no more problems with that tooth!!!!

I'm thinking of you today - I would also go the anesthesia route -- and I also went to an oral surgeon. I hope all goes well and that you don't need the jello.

Suki, I am thinking of you today and know all will go well. Hugs!

I'm thinking of you today Suki. I've been putting off having my problem tooth looked at, so I can certainly relate. Blessings and peace, dear friend.

I thought I'd commented on this post, but I see I didn't. I had a wisdom tooth pulled back in January. Since you have this extraction behind you by now, I'll tell you my story: All went very well until two pieces of root got left behind. When my dentist began doing this kind of "humming in the dark," I knew something had gone wrong. But actually it wasn't that bad after all. About a week later the tiny shards fell out when I was brushing my teeth, and everything healed beautifully.
