For these two, which I have shown before, I tried to "soften" them with more collage around the edge of the main image. Here, I glued on patchwork strips I made awhile ago. Note that I drew stitches on between the squares copying Katie Jane's method on her ATC.
Here I added tea dyed lace and faux rubies at the corners.
I glued up two more, this time using my Asian flavor collages which contain pressed flowers and below a real butterfly. Mom gave me these butterflies which she had for years. I would never catch and kill a butterfly to use. Although my Dad, when a child, caught and then asphyxiated butterflies and I may have done a time or two myself. I do recall having a butterfly net. Or maybe it was my brothers'.
I think the collages with a bit of nature in them look better on the barn board than the top two. What do you think?
On Friday, I am driving down to M. Heart's territory. Somewhat near the Miss Florence diner where I hope to eat lunch before seeing my homeopathist for the first time in 2 years for my physical and check up. (Scroll down to the bottom of the link post) She is also a nurse practitioner so she can do that. It takes me about an hour and a half one way and rain is expected all day. A long trip, especially after just making that other long trip. If it were to be sunny I'd feel better about it. But oh well. Hope you all have a great weekend full of fun, friends, and creativity.

So beautiful artwork, again! I like the most the one with the butterfly! So pretty! You're a really all-embracing, holistic artist, Suki!
...ah, and the leaf is a Gingko leaf, isn't it? (My father liked Gingkos so much and planted one in my childhoods garden -therefore I know them well...Gingko, a sign of longevity!
I especially like the top one, but they're all beautiful. I'm enjoying working on some too. They're very absorbing!
I hope all goes well at your check-up. It will be worth the trip, taking care of youreslf is important.
such lovely collages, and i love the barn wood.. take care driving!
Suki, I love the last two most, especially the one with the asian flower and sign. I think it looks so great on the wood, the simplicity of the lines in the flower are repeated in the wood's structure, that makes it an entity and very interesting, I love it,
Andrea
Suki, I really love the one with the butterfly and the Asian inspired one just above it. The others are wonderful, as well, but these are my favorites. The butterfly one has some incredible colors...
I think you can sometimes find butterflies which have expired from time to time. Of course for them to be in one piece, you have to find them quickly. They are beautiful creatures, to be sure.
When you get back we will have a toast to your very good health! Be safe on your trip!
I must say like the last two the best, but they are all lovely. Have a safe trip on the way to your check up.
YES, the cloth fabrics and beads made a big difference. They look more finished now. The drawn stitches is very clever. Looks real. I love the top one. I love them all actually, but the name Larkin struck me on the top one, as my DH has Larkins in his family line.
The flower and butterfly are lovely too. Butterflies do not live long. It's a wonder we don't find their beautiful wings lying on the ground more.
I hope your drive will be safe and easy for you, and the results of your exam good too. Enjoy your lunch!
Oh Suki The purple collage with the butterfly and the gingko leaf!!!!! Stunning! I love it!
I saw at Kim´s you didn´t drove off in the rain. Good decision!
take care and have a good weekend!
love >M<
These are all great. I too love the butterfly one. They dont live long. This way they can be enjoyed longer. But I could never do it myself.
Hope you made the trip ok and enjoyed your lunch. I take it your trip was todays friday.
Driving in the rain to an old diner is worth alot in my book. I've done alot of the actual worcester diners...the "Miss Worcester" was one of the best. I always wanted a diner in my back yard coverted into a studio.
Diners rule - oh yes, have fun at the Dr.'s
your collages are fantastically arty. we did collages in art class last week, and mine stinks, i just don't 'get' the collage thing...not yet anyway. so glad you're back missed you mate.
oh suki i wish i had known you were coming this way! i am usually available on fridays (i only work at the office mon-thurs) and tend to drive to the northampton fridays to run errands. i saw your post this morning and thought of you as i passed by miss flo's this afternoon on my way to get my hair cut.
next time perhaps!
there's an award waiting for you on my blog with hugs. so glad we are good friends here in blogland...ps love the new header, so you have nice hands and feet, young feet!
Oh Suki these are fun, really love that old wood! The Asian one is gorgeous but they all have there own wonderful appeal!
Just a note to everyone. Thanks for your good wishes on my trip to homeopath's however I canceled and rescheduled for next wk. I did not sleep all night plus they predicted flooding rains so I chickened out. I hate to do this with self-employed persons however I will pay her extra when I go on Wed.
Claudia, thank you. Yes, a ginko leave which I picked up in handfuls in a Cape Cod town. The wind had blown them onto the sidewalk. I love them too. I am now out of ginko leaves though.
Thanks Patti. I have not taken care of either my teeth or my health for awhile due to all the moving. The top collage shows a picture of my great-grandmother Susan quilting blind.
Thanks Natalya. My bro says there is some silver barn wood around, but so far I havent found it. That'd be very nice too.
Andrea, that is a rhododendron flower that I pressed and glued to the collage. I like Asian themed things, the simplicity and patterns.
Kim that particular butterfly is very beautiful. I want to wax lightly over it to preserve it better.
Annie, thanks. Well, safe trip next Wed I guess as I didnt go. :)
Oh Suki, I really like these. All of them look good on the barnboard, I think. I feel privileged that you used my "stitch" design and it looks good on your piece.
I have to agree with you about catching and killing butterflies, but if they are already dead, go ahead.
Suki, There you go again...more work! I especially like the pressed flower with the nice balance of papers on the left. The wood is gorgeous. Will you be adding encaustic? Do you press your own flowers?
I just heard Hurricane Kyle is being watched by the state of Maine...what is your weather like?
I lived in New Jersey for a couple of years and loved going to diners...this one looks very special!
Mary Ann
Lynn, that's interesting abt the Larkin name. thanks for feedback on revised barnboard collages.
Marianne, of course the fallacy of changing the day is it may be horrible weather on Wednesday too, but oh well.
Cris, I wrote the post a day ahead and so wasnt sure how to verbalize the day I was taking the trip. Instead of "today" I said "Friday" but it did mean that Fri.
Mim, that would be a realy cool studio. I wrote an article for a Cape paper on diners. There are a number of them on the Cape and one I think was moved from Worcester.
Soulbrush, I missed you too. I am not sure i really get collages either. There are lots of techniques like transferring images which I've never been able to do.
Yes M. Heart. Better planning on my part might mean we could meet! What fun. I didnt go that day anyway but next visit is not on a Fri.
Soulbrush, I have fetched the award. Thank you so much. Will post it soon. Glad something about me looks young. :) thanks
Thanks Karen. My bro says there is some silver barn board around but I havent come across it yet. That'd be really nice.
Hi Katie Jane. Thanks for the stitch idea. Now, what to do with this stuff I'm making. There is an autumn fair nearby next week but I had intended to go to the Bratt Literary Festival so didnt sign up for the fair. Oh well.
Hi mary ann. I do press my own flowers. That was a rhododendron flower. I just press them in a phone book for the most part. I will cover the centers with wax to preserve them. Kyle will no doubt bring some rains. I'm not in Maine though, but NH. Wish I were in Maine actually. Great place.
