Painting by Laurel Porter Gaylord
Dormant
She raises herself
out of lethargy and quiet,
chops onions and squash
to the radio's drone.
On the stove, her mother's
cauldron awaits.
Out the window
white gathers
on pond and mountain.
Cold enwraps, an icicle scarf.
Armored in wool and down
she snowshoes into a cave
sleeps with manuscripts
covered with runes.
Soon she will eat soup.
Soon she will sing.
Did you know that many magazines consider a poem previously published if you have published it on your blog? In which case you cannot publish it in the magazine

Gorgeous, gorgeous, visually-evocative poem....and, it compliments Lo's haunting poem so well!
That's an interesting fact about poems being *published* if they appear on a blog...
I love this one, Suki.... I can SEE the reality of every word....
Love to you and the Furry One,
♥ Robin ♥
This is a lovely poem and it does go with Lo's painting very well. So that means you cant get your work published if you post it on your blog? That's a bummer. I wont tell if you wont. lol
Your poem is a story within itself. Sad to me.
Beautiful, evocative words. A good choice of image as well ;)
I don't find it sad. I find it "winterish" and "reflective."
Bummer about previously published if shown on blog. Has something of yours not been accepted because of that?
It would be their loss.

I just hesitate to "cheat" and send a poem published on my blog although I like to try to publish in magazines.
Wonderful imagery indeed, along with the painting. I can see the woman (you?) dreaming of manuscripts, covered in runes... So mystical :)
I think I have heard that before about the publishing, but I also think there's a way around it. You might want to connect with Jamie over at Talking Waters, a poet who is published and publishes her poems on her blog. (you can get to her through my blog roll list). :)
Happy Dreams! :)
May you sing and eat soup!(though not at the same time as that could get messy). I love the mix of the mundane with the mystical in your poem...and the icicle scarf: real down to earth goddess stuff.
I think that is absolutely ridiculous about a magazine refusing a poem previously blogged.
Thanks Christine. I checked out Jamie's blog. Very nice. Looks like her poems were published in book form.
In that case they want previously published works.
It's just the magazines that require a work never to have been published before including on a blog.
Loucacio, that was my reaction totally. That it is ridiculous to consider a poem or anything previously published if it appeared on ones own blog.
also re: goddess. I was thinking of the Norse goddess Skandi goddess of winter who skis and snowshoes with bow and arrow and loves winter.
Hello Suki, I read this poem again and again, savour it! It's so rich! So beautiful! Have a good day, here in Paris it's cold too but the sun is shining and the days get longer, waiting for Spring......Andrea
Suki, you are an absolute word weaver! This is a stunning piece and I love it so much! Thank you for sharing it.
Why not try this the other way around, first see if you can get some of your poems published, then after they are, put them on your blog! We will all just have to learn to be patient!
Keep writing, the world needs your beautiful words!
Lovely words and as expressive as the painting!
I didn't know the magazines had such a ruling...sometimes it might be necessary to overlook some rules as they are made for those huge blogs.
what a beautiful poem and painting - I love them both. Darn the blog publishing - hell with it!!!
What a lovely combining of artists works here! They compliment each other so well.
No, I didn't know that. good thing I publishsed myself. I didn't mind that all my art had already shown on my blog at all! ;-)
I am sorry you are still so wrapped in winter where you are - we have had a couple of days of warm sunshine and it has made a huge difference to my mood. And flowers have responded too - I only hope you have some tastes of spring soon. Until then, soup will have to do.
