A Lost Soul: self-portrait

I am almost done with my 12 paged signature on the theme of self-portraits. This one is probably a favorite although this would be a way younger me. LOL. Really, when I do portraits they are not portraits in the sense of reproducing the person realistically, but more capturing a spirit or essence.

I painted a few layers, scraped on paint with a credit card and did some rubber stamping before painting the face. Charcoal and acrylics.

I used a stencil for the letters. I made the dot pattern using the plastic net they use to cover those little oranges you can buy at Christmas. Collaged pages from a book.

Now I need to finish the last two pages and then tear up another 22" by 30" paper for the next signature. I may paint to the theme of those who have passed on. I am now in a once a month bereavement group and hearing what people have to say has stimulated the desire in me to honor those I love who have died.

This is great Suki. All the texture makes this a lively page. I am glad you are in a group that can hopefully bring you forward and bring you peace.

suki, i look at this and i think it must be so good to move your feelings from the inside to the outside. how could one not be sad in the viewing, but too the learning is obvious.

i love hearing about your process. i am thinking we should all have a make art weekend on my porch. i would clearly benefit the most.

Wonderful layers of colors and textures .... And it sounds like a good project for honoring those who have passed on also. A subject that is too sanitized and locked away.

P.s. Thank you so much for the love offering of cards that are art. They are beautiful :)

Very nice layering of patterns, textures, colours. I like your intention to capture the essence rather than laboriously trying to reproduce exact features. Sounds like a really gratifying project you've got going with making this book.

Your art just grows and grows in leaps and bounds! Such a lovely Suki in this ageless pose.
Your group sounds quite interesting and I am glad it is inspiring you to do yet more art.

It does look like your photo. It's beautiful. You have been on an art roll I think. It's fun to see all you've been working on.

And why lost soul? Makes me think of the Shamanic process of soul retrieval. Do you know the work of Sandra Ingerman?

I like this project of self-portrait and would like to see them all, one after the other...rich experience and I do see a likeness which is enough in this case.

i read Sandra Ingerman's book many years ago but maybe another look might be good. thanks for the thought ZenDot

Here I am....late, but slowly returning from the land of "The Ring"..this morning, I returned to the de Young (after a two month absence)...and *snuck* in before the public was admitted to view the Picasso Exhibit...and ....this painting has a lot of his self-portrait energy and passion flowing through it....I MEAN IT!
You have truly captured the essence of "Suki"....

Love,

♥ Robin ♥

what a wonderful way to honor and respect those who have passed... and to be in a group must be reassuring- connecting with others.

Your self portrait FEELS like you to me, Suki...she's beautiful, warm and thoughtful. Those things really come through for me.

I'm glad you're in a group. It is awesome in the way being in a group with others who are finding their way can open doors for oneself..xx

I love a book of hand made art. Nothing better. If you find the acrylic wants to stick to it self when the book is closed, slip in pieces of wax paper between the pages when the book will be closed.
Honoring the ones I loved who are gone is a constant thread in my life. I did the whole series of Bone Prayer paintings about that. Doing the paintings released some of the energy for me.

I like this self-portrait. Who of us doesn't feel our spirit is younger than our physical body anyway :--)

I am glad you our in the bereavement group. Mike's death taught me many things, but one of the important learnings was that one never knows what the person in the grocery line ahead of you has suffered and kindness is healing...
