On a recent walk I spied quite a number of trees in this condition. I don't know if these holes were made by animal or man?
But this cut looks pretty man-like to me.
At last a couple of buds. I am processing something very difficult for me, thus have been absent from blog-land for a bit. I will try to get around to your postings soon.

I am also starting to see buds on the branches though it is still cold and windy here- waiting for spring and renewal- and best wishes for you too.
what did anais nin say about a bud opening up versus staying closed, suki? i'm thinking a difficult frost may hasten the most beautiful flowering.....

ooh - that KJ - she's so deep! but I agree, the best flowers come after a frost - they are the strongest
Pileated woodpeckers make those elongated holes in tress. There must be close by. Big Hugs.
Finally spring buds!!!!
Have no idea who made those holes I think animals.

Lisa is right...the oblong holes are made by Pileated Woodpeckers. The tree may have snapped in high winds because it was already hollow in the core.
