Two Places I've lived

I received a most exciting email from Robin of The Violet Hour blog. I had mentioned to her that I once lived in San Francisco at 1146 Taylor on Nob Hill and Robin was passing by there the other day and took this photo.!!!!!!

I've been asking friends who travel to SF for years to take a photo if they could, but this is the first one I've actually received, and that was without asking. Thank you Robin. You made my day and inspired my memories.

I think they spruced up the doorway since then. I lived there in 1967 with my college friend S. We came out from Ohio, where I went to college and S. was born. We paid $75/month for a two room apartment, kitchen, bathroom and a living room that served as a bedroom.

In the living room wall was a Murphy bed door with no bed inside. We slept on the floor in sleeping bags. We picked up a wooden crate from a Chinatown sidewalk for a table. When we arrived we bought bouquets of flowers from the street vendor and gave them to all the apartment residents. I wonder if they thought we were nuts?

Downstairs lived a couple of guys who sang in the SF Opera. Across the hall lived a guy who's kitchen was so full of boxes you couldnt cook in it. He grew cute little plants on his window sill. He kept winking about these plants. Much later we understood why.

If we stood on the window sill, we could see the Bay Bridge. Next door was a cute little restaurant that looked like it hadnt been updated since the '40's. A trolley car stop was nearby.

What a blast all this was. I walked up and down the hills with my sketchpad, drawing. Meeting people. Stopping in at City Lights Bookstore. Hanging out in Golden Gate Park. Walking around in The Haight. At the Coffee Gallery in North Beach I met the man who became my husband. It was an energy filled time.

As many of you know I now live in New Hampshire. Today, M. Heart posted this video rap/musical about NH. Click here to see it. It's a hoot. And it almost makes me want to stay here.

What lovely memories you have about your time in SF. I have similar ones about when I lived in Vancouver...as you say, it was an energy filled time.

I love photos of doorways; this one sits right up there with the best!

Great SF memories...a special time for you! I don't know the dates but in the 60's I was working in Civic Center and riding the streetcar on Market Street everyday!
Great looking doorway too!

(wink) I think I know what he was growing.

In the tiny backyard of our Brooklyn apartment we planted tomato plants. A short time later we had a party. It was BYOB, but other inebriations were also enjoyed. At the end of the summer amongst the tomatoes grew a tomato-less six foot tall aromatic plant. (giggle)

Isn't it fun to remember the good ol' days? They were fun times, for sure. I often drive by places where I lived way back then. The always evoke such good memories. What happened to those days, I wonder? Thanks for a lovely little post.

Hmm they had a pot of something growing huh? ;) How sweet of her to take this photo for you. I think a lot of where I lived, in So CAL as a kid, is all under FWY now. If they keep on going it will be ALL under FWYs...

I love this post!
$75 a month in SF yet! I think I was paying around $150 a month for a dublex in Vallejo...a young married with a 2 yr old son and pregnant with my daughter in 1967, a year back from Israel. It would be a while till I learned about the potted plant! ;-)
To think we might of met then...
Six years earlier I was walking those streets, going in that bookstore...

Ah, memories is right!

thanks for sharing...fun tripping with you. Talk about flash backs.

How wonderful! I lived in SF 13 years ago, but I paid a lot more than 75 a month :-). I lived there for almost 20 years and loved it.
City Lights book store is the best, I have spent many, many hours there.
Lovely of my friend Robin to take that photo for you :-).

Yeah, that video almost made me want to move back, lol!

I wish I had more photos of old apartments and studios...it would have to be quite a big photo album I moved around so much for a while. It was really nice of Robin to take this photo for you!

Suki, my first apartment in SF was on Bush Street, between Jones and Taylor. The real estate agents called the neighborhood "lower" Nob Hill. I loved it.
