curio

When I was madly opening boxes trying to find my tintypes, I came upon this postcard. It had been in with my mom's collection of ephemera. It was made from cigarillo or cigar wrappers. The original wrappers are collaged on here. Thought it quite amazing.

On the back it says "Dear Postal Friend, have you made any of these cards. I am making a few. Thought I would send you one. Hope you like it. Would you like to joint the Jolly ??? Postal club. it is one dollar to join it. I have joined it. If you think you would I will send you a slip that you can make out then send it back to me. Sincerely, your postal friend..."

I finally did find the tintypes. I had packed them with my art supplies all of which are outside in the shed. I hadn't looked there as I really thought I'd packed them in the boxes labeled "bedroom." Not that it was all that important. But when almost everything you own is packed in boxes sometimes you get crazy about finding a particular thing.

The message on the back of the postcard reminds me of the art we share blogging - especially the traveling sketchbooks you work on!

Wow. What a unique item. Did your mom join the jolly postal club?

"Bedroom" probably isn't a very specific label for a box. Unless it actually contains a bedroom!

This brings back memories of collecting these cigar rings when I was little. A wonderful postcard.

Wow, that means that penpals (blog pals, etc.) have been doing things like ATCs for a very long time. That collage is super cool. It reminds me of Tramp Art, which I adore. This postcard might be quite collectible. One day I will see you on the Antiques Road Show, maybe?

That is an amazing postcard with all those cigar bands. Remember when we wore them for rings?

Hilary Who, I must just respond to my box labels, which mostly are excellent. Bedroom just denotes which room for the future movers to put the box in. I also have more specific labels as to the contents. Re: tintypes I thought I might have put them in without an extra designating label though. However, eventually I saw on the "art" box "tintypes". I've been moving for five years, unable to find a place to settle so my boxes started out at least w/excellent labels though some have been unpacked and repacked and the labels get muddled.

I'd love to be on the antiques road show, probably the only tv show I adore.

I think this post card was proabably from Mom's youth but not sure. There is no date on it. I think she got it from one of my great aunts.

like Teri, I remember cigar bands as rings.
Wonderful thinking that even then there was 'mail art'.
I'm with you,,,always enjoy the Antiques Road Show,,,but don't make a point of watching, just catch it now and then.

how cool is that? i have some things like that from my grandmother that they obviously did in some sort of round robin and postcards.

and believe me, i know how things get labeled, mislabeled and moved around...

What a wonderful find, that post card. Perfect for our next postcard exchange! LOL

Finding things, remembering where they are, oy, how i understand this one. Just after cleaning up my studio I already have forgotten where I ORGANIZED X Y and Z.

Your winter banner is beautiful but it give me the chills. We actually had a sunny spring like day here to day.

What a treasure you have found, not to mention what you were looking for, isn't it fun to do that.

Suki, Caroline and I are thinking of having a mail art exchange and we're just in the beginning stages of forming it.
Let me find my original email and forward it to you.
You would make such amazing mail art. Oh my goodness, how could you have slipped through?

Stay tuned my friend ;)

It seems I spend a LOT of time looking for something or other-- whether they are in boxes or not-- I put things away and then I forget where I put them-- glad you found the tintypes

What an amazing card...I think I recognize a part of it, hee hee!

Your craft box arrived yesterday and I have been so excited. Such treasures, Suki, thank you so much! I have already begun crafting...something...I'm not really sure what it is yet, lol! One of the collages I intend to make will make use of the birch bark and feathers...can't wait to begin that one!

I'm not sure if the collages will be very good, as this is my first one, ever! But it is surely a lot of fun. Thank you again!
