As of 4 pm yesterday no one had guessed it right. A cordwainer makes shoes and other items from soft leather. The word originates from Cordoba Spain and cordovan leather. For those of you who live in London you can see a Cordwainer statue on Watling Street which was part of the cordwainer district. See a picture of this statue and learn more
here. Also, until 2000 there was a London cordwainer school now incorporated into another fashion insitute.
Here is an official cordwainer website.
There is also a science fiction writer named
Cordwainer Smith.

Yup - I had to google it, would never have thought of the connection to leather! It's still an adorable house tho
oh! i wouldn't have guessed. i'm still going to call j that, heehee.
Very interesting. Cordwainer sounds like a last name not a first name to me.
Very interesting...never, never would have guessed. So a shoe cobbler is very different...maybe just for repairs?
Yup, My great-grandad was a shoe maker in the early 1900s, he made fiddles too!
Great fun! Thanks for all the history.
Oh, I would have been stumped too. I never would have associated with Cordoba and cordovan leather.
I just had no idea, not even a bad guess brewing in my brain. Amazing how much we don't know.
