Farmer's Market

Every friday afternoon in the summer there is a farmers market.

Fresh veggies. Music. Organic meat. Handmade soaps. Plants. Lots of people.
I've gone to them all except the week I was away. I love it. I buy my brother freshly made bagels. Lettuce for me. Radishes. Greens to stir fry. Some items such as fresh spinach are very expensive. But all is very fresh. You can also buy dinner at several booths.

Across the street is this cute train station still active although with very few passenger trains coming through.

I go by myself and am there by myself. How do you meet people? Rhetorical question really.

suki,
mmm, love fresh spinach.

I frequently go places by myself. I used to be very, very shy. I still am a bit. As I've become older and aware of that fact, I now find myself chatting with people at art fairs, farmer's stands and even in cashier lines. I've found they don't usually bite. (smile)

Nice market Suki, how lovely to have it there every Friday. Well I guess if you begin to talk spinach or lettuce, eventually it can develop into something else, :)..., but one has to be in the good mood to do that:)

Oh I love Farmers Markets. How fun.
This looks like a nice big one. We have one in town too. smaller but it has the fresh produce of local farmers and Plants of local growers.
I always go with con but we end up chatting with others around us. I find I say stupid things to start conversations but then others do to. :)

I am usually surrounded by people, all hours of the day (and night). Tonight though I am home alone! Saturday Night Fever! And I completaly enjoy it. I sit out on my kitchen veranda with the radio playing opera.

Suki, this farmers market looks great. I have been to many markets over the years. The ones here are so-so. There was a really good one in Santa Fe, NM where a woman taught me how to make the best grilled salmon. But the best farmers market I have found in the US...they can't compare to the European markets...was in Billings, Montana. It was like a festival every Saturday morning. They closed off a huge intersection which encompassed about 7 or 8 city blocks and it was full!

As far as meeting people...I am not so good at it in person. I make friends with the woman at the Whole Foods Market here. I have had fun making friends with you and my other blog friends. But I get the feeling I am much more of an introvert than you are!

Thanks for the special outing, Suki! You are a special friend!

Nice market, Suki. We have one on Saturday mornings in the town where I work, in fact, it is right across the street from the post office. I have been meaning to snap a few pics but I forget my camera every Saturday!

I find it difficult to meet people too. Although I am surrounded by people at my jobs, we are all busy working, and I just haven't felt a "connection" with most of them. They are all working moms and grandmoms, with no interest in art or anything other than family. I'm glad I found you all, because I was begining to feel like a square peg in a round hole!

Sometimes I find friends at art fairs. That's why I attend so many. Kindred Spirits.

I meet people through my blog. I met my friend Kaki by asking if I could interview her dog for my blog. I was clearly feeling very confident and more extroverted than usual that day!

The Farmer's Market here is only so-so too. Some of it isn't local, but brought in from other states. We do find many roadside stands along our trip to the lake, though. Last year the local crops weren't very good, but the year before we had lots of fresh corn, tomatoes and watermelon, fresh from the fields!

Suki, I cannot imagine you remaining a stranger very long,,,as you seem to be so outgoing,,,,with a lot to say,,, things worth saying!

So glad that you took us along. Haven't been to one in so long. Would love to open one here in our town. That would fill such a great niche here... Kayce

Farmers Markets are great and such a lovely atmosphere too. Meeting people in the real world is just like blogging I guess ... you just make a comment and take it from there...

Oh thanks everyone re: meeting people. Actually I am good at chit chat, ie: going into shops and chatting with the owner etc. What I find so difficult is discovering deeper friendships and/or up here anyway people with similar interests who aren't too wacky.

Chewy, the fresh spinach is great either raw or cooked. Thanks re: shy. I tend to be shy if I have to enter a big party that's already in progress. And generally am introverted but after years of living alone I did teach myself to chit chat.

I do love the farmers market. A nice way for local people to earn some money from their neighbors rather than shopping at Star Market.

Cris there is an even bigger one in another town but it takes me 45 minutes to get there so I haven't been yet this summer.

Britt-arnhild, sounds delightful. Glad you got an evening alone. Those are necessary gifts when one is so often with others.

Kim, that market in Billings sound stupendous. It's funny, we have several on the Cape but I rarely went. I am introverted Kim but i fight it as I don't want to end up like my Mom and Dad up here with no friends at all. It is a delicate balance. I love to be alone, yet it seems like a human need to talk, at least for me--tho not my mom apparently. As for yourself, I should think it would be hard to make deeper friends when you move so often. Deep friendships take a lot of time.

Katie Jane your comment re: your co-workers gives me a chuckle. My last two years on the cape I hung out with A. who played Senior Softball. I went to almost all his games. The wives of the players would sit on lawnchairs on the edge of the field and talk talk talk. Mostly about their kids and grandkids exploits which were never ending, or about their health which sometimes was fragile, or about restaurants. even tho this kind of conversation is not one I really engage in I just loved listening to them. Oh, this is what so many people connect with and share. It was a way of being friends and having a connection that was unusual for me and fascinating.Of course, I had little to add to the conversation. If I told them what was in my thoughts and life they'd probably ostracize me. They thought for example that one shouldnt wear sox with sandals???? I always wear sox with sandals. I mean, who cares? that sorta thing.

Kelly, I think blogs are really appealing to the more introverted shy folks. I have met lots of people via the blog too, although not in person unless I knew them before blogging like Mary from Cape Cod.

Babs, I love roadside stands the best really. and corn from the mid-west sounds like heaven. Cape Cod corn is pitiful. However, I'm looking forward to lots of New Hampshire corn which is both good and cheap. Thanks for the vote of confidence. It is easier to make friends now I have lots of life experience under my belt. It's hard to find someone I don't have some little thing in common with in some way. It's just putting forth the energy to do these things. I feel so tired a lot of the time.

KC thanks for stopping by. Great idea to start your own farmers market. what a boon to the community.

Patti, you make me chuckle. I love that, "you just make a comment and take it from there." Thanks.

what a place... fresh and alive...
i would go there even if i didn't need anything to buy...
how are we going to meet people, after all?... good question...
rhetorical questions sometimes are better than those that require answers...
;)

fabulous shots...

I finally read everything I missed lately.
Your place there looks so much better in the spring!
Love your wisteria banner now. So much sunnier.

Mary it's funny but the only Farmer's Market i went to on the Cape was in Falmouth. I know there is a great one in Orleans and Hyannis. I asked someone if i could join their poetry critiquing group which meets tonight but i am feeling that is too much. I dont want to have to write poems or critique them right now, but it is tempting as to me they are people who love to write and love poetry.

Human Being, yet I do faithfully go even if I dont plan to buy. Right now it's mostly lettuce anyway. But it is all so fun.

Marianne, yes spring, summer and fall it is lovely here. So the key is to find someplace else in the winter. That Island Katie Anne wrote about sounds good, in Florida.
