My Mother's Hand

Mom says she's going to wear her jewelry. Earings, necklaces rings. She puts on different pieces each day. I didn't know, before I lived here this month, that she was so into jewelry. I find it so touching somehow.

Mom also keeps the coffee maker filled with fresh coffee grains waiting to be made, even though neither she nor I drink it. She and Dad used to make two cups of Gevalia coffee each morning. I didn't know she was so "romantic." Also, until I took it to my brother's, she kept the last box of cereal purchased for Dad's breakfast on the table. Unopened. She told me she was saving it for my brother so I took it over to him and only later realized it was there for her. As if Dad was going to come in and sit down and eat breakfast.

I am coming to know my mother in a different way than ever before. In the past, we were often at odds and I found her harsh and lacking in empathy. Now she seems so gentle and understanding. Maybe it's me who has changed?? It is wonderful she has lived this long, so I can be with her as a friend. She's a pretty cool mom.

Isnt it amazing how time changes things between people. we all mellow with time. and we realize that time isnt something we really have a lot of & we need to make it all count right now. Good for you and your Mom.

Your Mum does sound brave and noble. How good is it that you are able to see this while you still have time together.
